Congratulations to Rich Hutchins of La Mirada for winning Bike of the Month with his 1930 Harley Davidson VL.
Rich won a trophy provided by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys.
Rich is a third generation motorcyclist. This bike has been in his family since 1939 when his Grandfather Dick Hutchins bought it used for $150.00 up in
Visalia, CA. He put $50.00 down, and made $7.50 monthly payments.
Dick rode it down to Los Angeles after the war and started working at Los Angeles Harley Davidson. After working as a mechanic for years, he purchased the
dealership in 1959. In 1978, he moved to Yucca Valley and opened Hutchins Harley Davidson. He ran the business in Yucca Valley until 2011.
Dick rode until he was 90 years old, and passed away in October 2017 at the age of 94.
The VL was restored in the 1980's and on display in the store until 2007. It is nearly 100% original except for the front forks that were replaced in the 1940's.
Dick's brother was using the bike, while he was stationed in Italy and wrecked the front end. He had it fixed before Dick returned to the States.
Rich inherited two of his Grandfather's bikes and promised to bring the other one to our meet soon.
Thank you Rich for bringing your Harley for all of us to see. See all the photos in our July Gallery.
